First adopters of eConowind’s VentoFoil wind support system share operational experiences

With the International Maritime Organization currently developing international regulations and standards that aim to achieve a 40% CO2 reduction by 2030, eConowind has shared additional information about its VentoFoil concept. The concept consists of a vertical wing that converts wind into additional thrust for vessels, resulting in annual fuel consumption savings of up to 15%.

The very first users of the maritime system – outlined below – have subsequently become official ambassadors for the eConowind VentoFoil following their experiences.

Our electric future: Maine mechanics prepare to service electric boats

A regional nonprofit has partnered with educators on a three-part training course to help prepare technicians to work on electric boats.

Electric boats will soon be docking along Maine’s rocky coast.

A new training program aims to help boat mechanics prepare to service them, with the goal of speeding up the adoption of these cleaner-running vessels.

The Island Institute, a nonprofit focused on supporting the needs of Maine’s coastal and island communities, has partnered with Maine Electric Boat, the Maine community college system, and the Mid-Coast School of Technology to develop a three-part training course that it hopes will create stable, sustainable career opportunities for Maine residents while boosting the confidence of would-be electric boat buyers. Angel Island Ferry to Be Converted to All-Electric

A ferry servicing California’s Angel Island State Park will be converted to operate as the state’s first zero-emission, electric propulsion short-route passenger vessel beginning in 2024.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) announced it is partnering with the Angel Island-Tiburon Ferry Company (Angel Island Ferry) to support the electrification of The Angel Island vessel.

PG&E’s Electric Vehicle (EV) Fleet Program helps medium- and heavy-duty fleet customers easily and cost-effectively install charging infrastructure via comprehensive construction support and financial incentives. Through the collaboration with Angel Island Ferry, PG&E plans to bolster electricity transmission to the ferry terminal and support the installation of charging infrastructure to help power the 59-foot, 400-passenger vessel for its ferry service, sunset cruises and chartered events. Angel Island-Tiburon Ferry aims to become state’s first electric short-run ferry

Marin County’s family-owned Angel Island-Tiburon Ferry Co. may soon become California’s first all-electric short-run ferry service.

The company owned by Capt. Maggie McDonogh is aiming to convert its existing 400-seat, 59-foot ferry from diesel power to electric propulsion in 2024 through a partnership with San Rafael-based Green Yachts company and Pacific Gas and Electric Co.

Angel Island-Tiburon Ferry Co. would be the first to meet a state mandate requiring new and existing short-run ferry services to become zero-emission by the end of 2025.Read more…

Launch of Arc One 500 hp – 370kW electric boat from Space X engineers

It is a big day for electric boats and boating as the much-talked-about Arc One is now officially on sale. The boat electric wake sport boat has a 500 hp (≈370kW) electric motor, 220kWh battery capacity and can hit a top speed of 40 mph (65 km/h).

From the Arc One website: “It’s now the most powerful electric watercraft commercially available, making today a milestone not just for Arc, but also for the nascent electric boating industry.”

The Arc One first came to the attention of Plugboats (and the world) less than a year ago, when Co-Founder Mitch Lee reached out to talk about the progress on his dream of building a high performance electric boat to equal or better the performance of gas drive models.

Limestone electric boats set for 2023 delivery after successful sea trials

The first of the Limestone electric boats – the Aquasport 2100CC (Centre Console) model – are ready to move into serial production after the successful completion of a series of rigorous real-world open water tests using the E-Motion electric outboard powertrain from Vision Marine Technologies. (Video of the sea trial is at the bottom of this article)

The company anticipates taking orders from dealers in fall of this year and has arranged for 25 E-Motion engines, rigging components and integrated battery systems to establish a production framework.

First serial production units are scheduled for delivery in spring 2023.

Transparent tourist submarine launches at Vietnam resort

A groundbreaking submersible has welcomed passengers on its first ever public dives in a hugely significant move for submarine tourism.

The Triton DeepView 24, built by Florida-based luxury submersible company Triton Submarines, finally launched at the Vinpearl complex in Hon Tre Island, Vietnam, last month, two years after it was delivered.

The 24-seat vessel, which can reach depths of up to 100 meters (328 feet), features a transparent acrylic hull, providing an incomparable underwater experience for those on board.

Passengers will be able to view shipwrecks, reef and marine life, as well as a diver show devised to raise awareness around environmental issues, during the 30-minute dives.

These rechargeable batteries are more sustainable and safer than lithium—and half the cost

Since lithium-ion batteries were first sold 30 years ago, they’ve dropped in cost by 97%. But they’re still too expensive for making electric cars that can compete in cost with fossil-fueled cars without subsidies, or to economically store wind and solar power on the grid. That’s why one Boston-area startup is developing a different type of rechargeable battery that it says can cut costs in half—while avoiding some of the other flaws of current batteries, from the environmental impact of mining to the fact that lithium-ion batteries can catch on fire.

“Our motivation was to make it affordable, so that it could be widely deployed as opposed to niche,” says Mukesh Chatter, CEO and cofounder of the startup, Alsym Energy, which emerged from stealth today and has raised $32 million from investors, including Helios Climate Ventures. Right now, many automakers are following Tesla’s lead and making luxury EVs. But Alsym wants to enable manufacturers to make lower-cost vehicles, including its first partner, an automaker in India. Tackling climate change “requires everybody’s contribution,” Chatter says. “It cannot be 1% of the people buying expensive luxury EVs.” The batteries are also affordable enough that they could be used in developing countries to store off-grid solar power for people who don’t have electricity access now.

Oldest Shipyard in the US to Build Vita’s Electric Flagship

Electric boat builder Vita has announced that its 10.5-meter (34-foot, 5-inch) flagship LION will be built at Hodgdon Yachts in East Boothbay, Maine, the oldest shipyard in the United States. Founded in 1816 and still family-owned, Hodgdon Yachts is renowned for building tenders for super yachts and is now joining the growing number of builders that are manufacturing electric vessels.

Vita, which was founded in 2017 and is separated into two divisions (Vita Yachts and Vita Power), released a 9-meter vessel called the Vita IX as its first prototype. That boat won the speed and endurance classes at the 2018 Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. Its 10-meter Electrix day boat prototype was also successful in Monaco a year later.

Vita introduced LION in 2020 as its flagship model. The dayboat is expected to reach speeds topping 35 knots and cruise at 22 knots, with propulsion coming from Vita Power’s V4 electric engine, which delivers 590 peak horsepower. According to Vita, the LION should be able to cruise at 22 knots for approximately an hour and a half. At mixed speeds, the boat will reportedly be able to last all day on a single charge. The onboard 233-kWh battery supports AC and DC charging and can reportedly recharge in under an hour on a DCFC with help from the marine fast charging network Aqua superPower.
