Launch of Arc One 500 hp – 370kW electric boat from Space X engineers

It is a big day for electric boats and boating as the much-talked-about Arc One is now officially on sale. The boat electric wake sport boat has a 500 hp (≈370kW) electric motor, 220kWh battery capacity and can hit a top speed of 40 mph (65 km/h).

From the Arc One website: “It’s now the most powerful electric watercraft commercially available, making today a milestone not just for Arc, but also for the nascent electric boating industry.”

The Arc One first came to the attention of Plugboats (and the world) less than a year ago, when Co-Founder Mitch Lee reached out to talk about the progress on his dream of building a high performance electric boat to equal or better the performance of gas drive models.

Limestone electric boats set for 2023 delivery after successful sea trials

The first of the Limestone electric boats – the Aquasport 2100CC (Centre Console) model – are ready to move into serial production after the successful completion of a series of rigorous real-world open water tests using the E-Motion electric outboard powertrain from Vision Marine Technologies. (Video of the sea trial is at the bottom of this article)

The company anticipates taking orders from dealers in fall of this year and has arranged for 25 E-Motion engines, rigging components and integrated battery systems to establish a production framework.

First serial production units are scheduled for delivery in spring 2023.

Transparent tourist submarine launches at Vietnam resort

A groundbreaking submersible has welcomed passengers on its first ever public dives in a hugely significant move for submarine tourism.

The Triton DeepView 24, built by Florida-based luxury submersible company Triton Submarines, finally launched at the Vinpearl complex in Hon Tre Island, Vietnam, last month, two years after it was delivered.

The 24-seat vessel, which can reach depths of up to 100 meters (328 feet), features a transparent acrylic hull, providing an incomparable underwater experience for those on board.

Passengers will be able to view shipwrecks, reef and marine life, as well as a diver show devised to raise awareness around environmental issues, during the 30-minute dives.

These rechargeable batteries are more sustainable and safer than lithium—and half the cost

Since lithium-ion batteries were first sold 30 years ago, they’ve dropped in cost by 97%. But they’re still too expensive for making electric cars that can compete in cost with fossil-fueled cars without subsidies, or to economically store wind and solar power on the grid. That’s why one Boston-area startup is developing a different type of rechargeable battery that it says can cut costs in half—while avoiding some of the other flaws of current batteries, from the environmental impact of mining to the fact that lithium-ion batteries can catch on fire.

“Our motivation was to make it affordable, so that it could be widely deployed as opposed to niche,” says Mukesh Chatter, CEO and cofounder of the startup, Alsym Energy, which emerged from stealth today and has raised $32 million from investors, including Helios Climate Ventures. Right now, many automakers are following Tesla’s lead and making luxury EVs. But Alsym wants to enable manufacturers to make lower-cost vehicles, including its first partner, an automaker in India. Tackling climate change “requires everybody’s contribution,” Chatter says. “It cannot be 1% of the people buying expensive luxury EVs.” The batteries are also affordable enough that they could be used in developing countries to store off-grid solar power for people who don’t have electricity access now.

The Electric Boat Market Looks to Tax Credits to Help Drive Market

The global electrification of automobiles, trucks, buses, marine vessels, and in fact all vehicles, is no longer seen as a futuristic idea. We are currently in the midst of one of the biggest global industrial and technological revolutions in history. Global mandates and regulation have solidified and further enabled carbon neutral goals. Electric vehicle (“EV”) sales have skyrocketed, charging infrastructure initiatives have been ramped up (and will accelerate greatly in coming years), and industry leaders have doubled down on their respective focus on improved battery technology. What was once thought of as a debatable endeavor has now caused mass acceptance and excitement in the marketplace.

The auto industry began its ascent towards electrification quite some time before the marine industry. Some of the auto industry’s biggest and most prestigious names have already planned to go completely electric within the next 5 or 10 years. JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) plans to sell only electric cars by 2025; Volvo plans to achieve that same goal by 2030; General Motors plans to go fully electric by 2035. Well respected high performance auto manufacturers Lotus and McLaren will no longer sell ICE powered sports cars by 2028. Volkswagen, 2021’s leading seller of EVs in Europe (with approximately 25% of the market), aims to have EVs account for at least half of its global production by 2030. Even luxury brands such as Lamborghini, Bentley, Porsche, and Ferrari, now have an expanding footprint in the electric sector. And of course, there’s Tesla.

Similarly, the marine industry’s biggest names have begun electrifying recreational powerboats (generally at the fishing low voltage end of the market), yachts, sailboats, ferries, as well as large commercial vessels. The movement surrounding electric boats and associated technology has grown tremendously, as evidenced by at the 2021/2022 international boat shows, and the arrival of post-COVID induced “staycations”. Boating OEMs will inevitably need to catch up with automobile manufacturers relatively quickly regarding electric transition, and the elimination or severe mitigation of diesel and gasoline engine vehicles.

Salona to launch the new 39 model

Salona 39 follows the design of her successful predecessor Salona 380 and even though her construction characteristics are similar, the new model is 300 kg lighter, the draft is shorter by 15 cm and by 10 cm wider.

Salona 39 has a very solid hull, as all the Salona models do due to a steel hull superstructure for which the shipyard has become well-known. The deck equipment is provided by Selden and Harken and all the ropes for the control of the sails are positioned discreetly below the deck, in the cockpit on 6 winches as a standard option.

Nowadays, almost all new vessels have rudders with two blades and it is quite curious that Salona Yachts have decided to keep the one blade on the new 39. Two blades definitely have certain advantages such reducing the resistance during the sailing, but when manoeuvring backwards one blade shows better performance.
